How to shine new shoes

Time to shine:

25-30 minutes

Difficulty:

Beginners

Introduction:

New shoes can have been on the shelves of a store for months before their new owner comes by to pick them up. In this guide we will quickly guide you through the process on how to prepare your new smooth leather calfskin and suede shoes for their first wear. Chances are that the old shoe polish applied during production has dried out over time and does not offer the proper protection you would like and lost its natural luster.

Learn how to:

  • Properly prepare your new shoes before wearing them.
  • Take the right steps for smooth leather, suede, nubuck, and sneakers.
  • Use the best products to nourish and protect the leather.
  • Prevent dryness, dirt, and moisture from day one.
  • Keep your shoes looking their best for longer.

How to treat new smooth leather (calfskin) shoes

1. Start by removing dirt and sand with a brush or a moist cloth. Nourish and gently clean the shoes using Saphir Médaille d’Or Renovateur. Apply the Renovateur using a cotton cloth and massage the Renovateur conditioner into the leather. You will see the top layer of old factory applied shoe polish come off the shoes.

3. Use Saphir Médaille d’Or Pommadier cream to enrich the colour of the leather. If you do not have a matching colour cream you can use 02 neutral cream instead. Pommadier cream will also give your shoes the basic level of protection and an overall nice shine.

4. Apply Saphir Médaille d’Or Pate de Luxe wax for extra shine and added protection against moisture. This step is option, although we personally recommend you always use a combination of Pommadier cream and Pate de Luxe wax for optimal protection and for a nice rich shine.th a horsehair brush. This brushing is only to remove leftover product, so there’s no need to polish just yet.

Since Renovateur offers little protection on its own, it should always be followed by a layer of Saphir Médaille d'Or Pommadier cream, and ideally also Pâte de Luxe shoe wax (see steps 2 and 3).

At this stage, your shoes have been gently cleaned and nourished. In step 2 we’ll go into more detail on shining, recolouring, and giving your shoes a basic level of protection.

Tip!

Keep your shoes out of direct light to prevent discolouration. A shoe bag or box works perfectly for safe storage.

How to take care of suede and nubuck shoes

1. Brush the shoes using a suede brush (preferably a crêpe brush to avoid scratching the suede) to remove loose suede and dust.

2. Same as with smooth leather, suede will dry out over time while the shoes are stocked at the shop. That is why it is important to nourish and impregnate the suede using a suede spray such as Saphir Médaille d’Or natural protector spray.

What else might you need later?

In addition to spraying your shoes once a month, we recommend cleaning suede shoes once a year with Saphir Médaille d'Or Omninettoyant, a specialised shampoo for suede and nubuck. Take a look at our suede guide for more details.

Tip!

Spray your shoes once per month to offer optimal protection against moisture and staining.

How to treat new sneakers

1. Use a soft brush to remove dust and any loose dirt from the surface.

2. If you have leather sneakers, make sure to spray them well before wearing them for the first time. Afterwards, you can waterproof your sneakers with a universal protective spray, such as Tarrago Sneaker Protector Spray.

And what’s next?

In addition to spraying your sneakers monthly, we recommend cleaning them once a year with Tarrago WASC Sneaker Cleaner. It’s a very effective cleaner that won’t damage the materials of your sneakers. For more details, check out our sneaker guide.

Tip!

Spray your sneakers once per month with Tarrago protector spray for optimal protection.
